I will post more later on. Enjoy!

Chapter
1
Cassidy
The
sound of the siren went through my ears. I could not see the
ambulance pulling around the corner, but the sound was deafening, so
I could tell it was there. The constant ring of the nurses phone was
displeasing, but it was something I had gotten use to. All I could
see around me was the white walls. A few posters hung on them, but
none were very interesting. They were mostly of different cures, like
for pellagra, and the famous people who tried them out. It was scary,
being alone, in a room full of sharp utensils and needles. It was
around noon, I think, or was it one? The clock was becoming blurry.
My eyes, what was happening to them? The nurse walked in with, as
usual, another few shots on a tray.
“Cassidy
sweetie. It is time for your shots honey.”
I
let out a small groan. The shots were nothing compared to the pain I
was it right then. All in felt was a small stinging. The second was a
bit more affective. I winced, but stayed laying on my hard, plastic
coated mattress. I had been in that doctors office for a few months
now, and was feeling no better then how I started. I felt a sharp
pain, as the last shot went into my arm. Then the nurse smiled.
Something I have not done in weeks, since I had become weaker.
“You
are a good girl, Cassidy. I am almost certain you will feel better
soon.”
The
nurse smiled again, and left the room. Right, ALMOST. The truth was,
the more they tried, the more they failed. Those doctors had put
about every kind of medicine they had into me, but nothing helped. I
was at the point of giving up on my life. Having my heart fail so
suddenly had been surprising since the beginning. Let me explain the
entire story.
I
was at my winning soccer game. We were at the finals, and so far, it
was 7-4. We were in the lead. There was very minimal time left. I had
my dark, flowing hair tied back in a braid. I was ready. The ball was
at my ankle. I was about to make the winning goal. Then, my heart
literally just STOPPED! I could not breathe. I tried to gasp a
breath, but failed miserably. I fell unconscious. When I awoke, I was
in the doctors office, in this very room. Now, I think it might have
just been the pressure from the feeling that if I missed the goal, I
would get kicked off the team. That day has flashed through my head
over and over. I was hoping I would be healed by now. So far, it was
no use. The only thing they had succeed at was making me live longer.
The longer I was alive, the more pain I went through. Face it.
Nothing could cure me. I was ready to let go.
The
more I tried to just let my life fly away, the more the doctors tried
to save me. I have lived for a good 13 years now. I was ready. My
heart beat was slow. The oxygen tubes were not working like they
should be. I was more of gasping for air. I do not know how I have
even managed this long. What ever it was that kept me alive, it was
slowly beginning to fail on me. My poor parents were devastated from
the start. They came to me every day to see how I was feeling. I
looked at the door, to find them entering.
“Hi
Cassidy. How are you feeling? Any better yet?” my mother asked.
“No
Mama.” I replied.
“Dear,
you will be OK. I promise. Here, I brought you a gift! Lets open it.
I am sure you will be over-joyed!”
I
opened the small box to find a book. On the cover, it had a picture
of a small, fuzzy, black rabbit. It was probably the best thing that
happened to me that day. I loved rabbits. The little puff of fur in
front of me made my eyes shine. I sat up, and hugged my mother. My
pit bull, Fang, jumped up on the bed next to me. I flipped through
the book, stroking my dog as I tried to read the words. My blurry
vision made it difficult, but I managed. I was so happy.
“Thank
you...” I whispered in a horse voice.
“Your welcome.” my father grinned. “We will let you read. See
you in the morning.”
“Wait,
mama.” I gasped, “Where is sis?”
Both
of my parents exchanged nervous glances. Something was wrong, I could
tell. Apparently, I was wrong at that.
“Your
sister is at a basketball game. She is so sad that she could not
come, but is was the champion round. We will let you rest. I will
make sure to bring her to you in the morning.”
At
that, I watched them as the lead my old guide dog out the door. I was
all alone again. The book they gave me was a picture book on rabbits.
Though the pictures looked more like blobs in my eyes, I managed to
make out what was which. I loved the little baby bunnies as they ran
trough fields of grass. It made my day, or what was left of it. I do
not know how long I was reading it, but soon it was dark. I put the
book down, satisfied, and let out a yawn.
The
nurse came in with a bowl of broth, and a few more needles. I was
exhausted, but the shots managed to keep me awake. The reason why I
did not fear dying was because I knew I would live again. I have
heard everywhere that once you die, you get a new life. And that is
what I was aiming for. Instead of becoming a human again, where my
life evolves around deadly oil, and electricity, I wanted to become
an animal. Not just any plain old animal either. I wanted to become a
rabbit.
Getting
a new life is just a theory. Once somebody dies, they do not come
back as themselves again, so they can not tell the entire world what
happens. They are something, or someone, totally different. I have
also heard you lose every bit of memory from your last life.
Personally, that does not sound too fun. What happens? Does your
brain, like, get ripped out of your head and replace with a fresh
one? Do you get hit with lightning, and forget everything that has
happened to you previously? Is it more like you pass out, and don't
remember anything? The more I thought about it, the scarier the
thought of dying became. I decided to forget about it.
For
some reason, that failed. The slower my heart beat, the more nervous
I got. I knew tonight was my last one. I grabbed a napkin, which was
the only thing I could find. I could barely see it, knowing my eye
sight was dying with me. My hand shifted across the table by me. I
searched for a pencil, but found nothing. All I felt was a vase,
paperwork, a bowl, which had held my soup, and a longish, stick like
thing. Aah, a paint brush. Now where was I going to get paint....
On
my dresser was a bottle of paint. It was too far to reach, but I
tried. There was no way I could manage without taking my breathing
cords off... which was not an option. Then, I found one thing that
was in reach, a hanger. I grabbed it, and started to bend it. Lucky
for me, it was one of those metal ones, and it bent easily. I bent it
into the shape of a long, stick, and then, I made a hoop at the end.
After a lot of hard effort, I got the paint. It was a deep magenta
color, which suited my taste. I got a decent amount of paint on the
brush, and on the napkin, wrote three, simple, harmless words. The
words served a purpose. LOVE YOU SIS was
what I wrote.
I
put the napkin, paint brush, and paint on my night stand. I grabbed a
stuffed animal rabbit and hugged it close. I could not see how I
stayed so calm. It was dark, and the lights started to shut off.
Every night, I was nervous it would be the last. The day had finally
come. I looked at the picture of my family right by my bed. A tear
fell down my cheek, as I mouthed to word I love you...
Slowly, I closed my
eyes. What would become of me? Would my spirit fly up in the arms of
an angel, who would carry me to heaven? Would I become a rabbit as I
wished I would? There were so many questions I had, and I know none
of them could be answered. The nurse walked in one final time to shut
out the light in my room. Her eyes spoke sorrow. I was not the only
person who was certain this was it. She tucked me into bed, and left.
Just like that. Letting out a sigh, I rolled over and faced the open
window. I heard wolves howling in the distance. They seemed happy,
being able to talk to one another, no matter how far apart they were.
My thought drifted.
My heart was down to only a few beats a second. It beat out of
rhythm. I was lightly gasping to breathe. My stomach was constantly
flipping. I felt like I was on a motionless roller coaster, that I
could not feel, but I could tell what was happening. I felt my entire
life flashing through me, including the soccer game, where this whole
thing had started. I saw my younger sister, when she was little. I
saw my old forth grade teacher, who had just recovered from
pneumonia. This was the end. I remembered when I woke in this
office. I was scared to almost death. Then I remember seeing my
wonderful nurse, Madelyn, for the first time. She lit up my day.
Soon, I went back to now.
The room was dim,
and turning darker and more blurry by the minute. I became dizzy, and
felt like I was in some sort of trance. The room was spinning
uncontrollably. My eyes, they seemed to be plastered open. I watched
the walls around me spin in circles. The spinning slowed, and so did
my heart. My vision grew darker, and darker... It was a deep gray
now. All the objects in the room seemed to merge together. I felt
sick, and my eyes felt like they were about to pop out of my head.
Now, luckily, none of this happened. Soon, the gray got darker, and
eventually turned black. I managed to close my eyes and fell into a
deep sleep.
I never woke up.
Chapter Two
Shadow
OK, it was not as
bad as it seemed. All I felt was a wisp of sharp wind, and then I was
standing in front of a giant stair case. It was a fancy stair case,
with red velvet carpet, and solid gold railings. I was wearing a red
and magenta dress, made of soft silk. I also wore a pair of crystal
heels, and a small, silver tiara. It was almost like in those fantasy
movies. So of course, I began to climb the stairs. They went up up
up. Higher and higher... I thought I would never reach the top. I was
near the point of giving up, when I saw it. I climbed fast, till I
came to a long hallway. I walked down it, and found a gigantic photo
book. When I say gigantic, I mean, GIGANTIC! It was way bigger then I
was. I stood by it, and I saw some familiar pictures.
I saw some of my
sister, and a few of my mom. I saw one or two about my dog, Fang,
from when we rescued him from the pound. There was my dad, and a
whole bunch of me. I saw my friends, my family, my home and my
dreams. Every time I turned to a new page, I would forget almost
everything about that time, place, or person. All my family, friends,
friends families. They all wove there way into the book. The pages
flipped themselves, and it was wonderful. I felt like I was in some
fantasy world. In front of me, stood a forest. It seemed more like a
wall, but the trees felt so real.. I managed to close the big book,
and I walked to the forest. Was this where my new life took place?
Was I going to become a wild rabbit? Taking in a big, happy breath, I
walked through into the forest depths. I felt a change, then saw a
big flash. I was blinded by the light, and then, I vanished.
When I regain
consciousness, I could not see. My eyes seemed to be sealed shut. I
felt fur, and just fur. My ears were working just fine, and so was my
nose. There were so many strange smells! I could hear a gruff, and
many different groans. Some happy little barks, or what seemed to be
barks. I was slightly confused. I could not stand, or even sit up.
Then, I got an idea. I must be a pet. I must be one of those pet
rabbits who live in homes. My new owners must have a dog. I was
thrilled!
To me, I felt
slightly strange. I was wearing no clothes, because I was an animal.
That was just plain odd to me. It was VERY uncomfortable. I had only
fur, and that made it weirder. I had the smallest string of memory to
my old life, which was not normal. I remember I was once a human, and
that was it. What was my old name? Who were my parents? Was I a girl?
Did I even have a family? All these ideas confused me. I curl up in a
ball, which surprisingly took WAY too much effort then it should
have. I could barely move. I was not comfy. What had happened!
Then I noticed
something different. I had a longer muzzle and tail. My ears were too
short to be rabbit ears. What was I! My entire few minutes of life
had started, and I did not know what I was. I had long legs, and my
teeth were growing in. They were sharp, and felt painful in my small
little mouth. My ears, the perked strait up. This was just not
normal. I felt claws, and started to freak out a bit. After a moment,
I realized they were my own. My memory was minimal, because I was so
young. All of a sudden, I felt tired. And once I let myself know
that, I fell asleep almost instantly.
I did not dream.
Day after day, I only could hear and smell. When I was hungry, I ate
food my mother gave me. I got older, and bigger. After a few moons,
my eyes opened. That was probably the scariest day of my life. I saw
something both frightening, and humiliating. All this time, I thought
there was a chance I was a rabbit, but it turned out I was something
in a totally different category. I, was a wolf.
Now, when I saw
them, all the wolves, so big and menacing looking, standing around
me, I could not help but let out a whimper of fright. I shrunk back,
and ran into a pile of fur. A blackish, dark silvery female gray wolf
was behind me. I assumed this was my mother. She was tall, and had
perky ears, like me. I had no idea who my father was yet. He was
nowhere to be seen, I think. Unless he was with the wolves that
looked all scary in front of me. All of a sudden, every wolf but my
mother bowed. They had their head to the floor, and ears forward. The
had their eyes closed, tails strait back. There back ends were on the
ground, also. It was like they had just laid down, with ears forward,
head facing the ground, and eyes shut tight. I stared at them,
confused.
My mother stood,
and said something I did not really understand. It sounded something
like,
“You may rise.”
but it mixed with a small growl, and low tone. I was surprised, how
they all obeyed my mom so suddenly. She dipped her head in dismissal,
and they left into the woods. One wolf stayed behind. She spoke to my
mother, in some odd wolf language I had not yet understood. My mother
seemed happy, but I was still confused. The wolf left, and my mother
looked at me. Her eyes sparkled, like the sun on a new day. They were
yellowish, and had a tint of orange. Her fur was more black then
silver, unlike mine, which was completely silver, like a deep mist.
She had ginormous paws, and big fangs. Even though she was my mother,
I slightly shook in fear.
She laid back down,
and I curled up next to her. Her fur was warm, and extremely soft.
Then she spoke, this time, I understood what she had said. I guess
pups had this different language then full grown wolves.
“Hello little
one. I am your mother. I go by the name Shadow.”
Her voice was
soft, and soothing. I felt sleepy. Even though I have opened my eyes,
I was still just a wolf pup. Letting out a cute little puppy yawn, I
curled into a ball, and listened to my mama talk to me.
You are my little
pup. Your name must be special. You want to know why, little pup?
Because you are an Alpha.”
I cocked my head at
her in confusion. What was an Alpha? Was I special? Was I supposed to
do something to show I am special? I mean, besides a wolf, what am I!
“You must be
puzzled. What is an alpha? Is that what you want to know? An alpha is
the highest rank wolf of all. Your father and I are Alphas, and you
being my daughter means you are an Alpha too. You must want to know
why they all bowed when you opened your eyes, yes?”
If I could speak, I
would say yes. I barely knew how to whimper, never mind talk. So
instead, I let her know by nodding vigorously.
“Because you are
an alpha, everyone respects you. When a Omega comes across you, they
will bow, and do the head thing. They do this to show we are
dominant. Omegas are the lowest ranking of wolves. Then, there are
Deltas, which are higher ranked then Omegas. Betas are higher then
Deltas, and we are at the top. Do you understand, little one?”
I was still a bit
confused, but I got the basics. There are four ranks, and they are
different. I am at top. The Omegas bow to me. I nodded.
“Good girl.
Remember, Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omega, in that order. The rank
system makes it easier for us all. You should rest. Let us sleep,
little pup. We can talk more in the morning.”
My mother rested
her head over her paw, and I did the same. It was not very comfy, but
I tolerated it just fine. All this wolf stuff was hard to remember. I
just had to remember the rank system. It could not be to hard. My
eyelids started to droop. I saw the moon just outside my den. I heard
the wolves howling. I was a wolf now, and a wolf I will be.
Before I had the
chance to sleep, a full grown male gray wolf walked into the cave. He
looked a lot like me. It was scary. When you think about it, he
looked almost EXACTLY like me. His chest fur was puffed up, and he
stood tall. He looked proud. My eyes opened wide, and my ears tilted
back. I shrunk back to my mother. She got up and smiled.
“It is OK, little
pup. This is your father, Zefar. Do not be afraid. He might be big,
but he is gentle as a pup, like you.” my mother cooed sweetly. My
father sat down, and dipped his head to me.
“Hello, little
one. Do you have a name yet?” Zefar asked.
I shook me head
nervously. Whether he be my father or not, he was BIG. And big wolves
scared me, knowing I was so small.
“Zefar, I have
not came up with a name, even though I have an idea. Want to hear
it?”
My father nodded.
Shadow whispered her idea into his ear. His poor ear. Once I got a
good look at it, I noticed it was slightly torn, which means
something bad once happened to him. I gulped.
“Shadow, I like
it. We will announce it to the entire pack in the morning. It is time
to howl. You may stay with our pup. I will talk to the other packs.
Good night.” my father walked out.
I heard many
different howls. Each of them had different meanings. Even though I
barely understood what they were saying, it sounded interesting. My
hearing was sharper. Different smells flooded through my nose. It was
almost overwhelming. I looked at my mother, and tried to ask what
they were talking about. I cocked my head, and would glance at the
moon. I whimpered and tried to howl. I am obviously need to work on
my howling skills. But somehow, she understood what I meant. I
smiled, and rested my head again.
“There are four
packs that live around the big mountain. The North, The South, The
East, and The West packs. They all talk to each other through howling
over the mountain. We are The Northern Pack. As a pack, we travel
sometimes. The mountain is so big, it is sky-lengths wide and tall.
We have many of places to explore. Only one wolf has made it up, and
lived. He lives at the very top. It is time for bed, little pup of
mine. Hush, and listen to the sounds of the other wolf howls. Listen,
little wolf. One day you will be howling with them. Try to recognize
what they are saying. Do you notice any familiar words I taught you?
Listen, little pup. I will teach you more in the morning. But now, it
is time for you to rest. Good night, little pup. Sweet dreams. I will
see you at Sun Rise.”
I
closed my eyes again. I listened to the sound of the howls. It was
interesting, and enjoyable. After listening for a bit, I began to
understand very few words. I heard Alpha,
and Omega often. I
also heard wolf, and
howl. A few other words I picked
up after a while, such as Zefar, moon, and
pack. The howls began to die
down after a bit. I was so tired. Today felt short, but it seemed so
long at the same time. Soon, I fell fast asleep, right next to my
mother.
Please give me all your thoughts on if you do (or do not) like my book!
